There are still many areas in rural Romania where the only means of transportation is by horse and wagon. These noble animals are not only used for family transportation, but are also required to work long hours pulling heavy loads in the fields.  During the hot summer months, the horses are swarmed with flies and are in danger from disease-carrying ticks and mosquitoes.  In the winter months horses sometimes lose up to 25% of their body-weight because there is often much too little food available. For families who themselves are just barely able to get by, there is no extra money to provide the basic care which their horses need.

Animal Care Austria’s partner group, Save the Dogs and other Animals  (www.savethedogs.eu)lead by Sara Turetta, is a Romanian animal welfare organisation which helps dogs in the Cernavoda/Medgidia area, but also quickly realized the need to improve the situation of the suffering working horses.  ACA’s founder and president, Carol Byers, and ACA consulting veterinarian, Dr. Ulrike Schicho, visited the award-winning animal welfare activist, Sara Turetta in May of 2013.  After touring the Medgidia area and surveying the dismal living conditions there where many homes have no electricity and no running water, it was immediately clear that helping to keep the horses in a better condition would also be an immense, almost life-saving support for the farmers in this economically depressed area.

The outreach program between Sara Turetta’s horse project and ACA has effectively been named, THE HORSE CARE PROJECT. This BASIC HORSE CARE PACKAGE offers the following help:

• Brush
• Hoof pick / basic hoof care
• Bit
• Head collar / Halter
• Vitamins
• External parasite treatment
• Internal de-worming medication
• Winter blanket
• Extra winter food
• 2-3 Veterinarian visits per year

The cost of the ACA HORSE CARE PACKAGE is 250 Euros yearly or 25 Euros a month.  The fate of working horses is a life-time of hard labor. PLEASE DONATE and help the families in Medgidia provide better care for their horses and for themselves.
